Re: I want a "Standard Sumbission Guidelines" posted

I understand the need for this. I'm older-fashioned, I like the 2 line spacings, don't mind the footers in case I lose a page when printed, etc. I think shunn looks similiar to the standards I've always been taught. BUT, when it comes to how LOTD actually prints the novels/anthologies and that format, we do need to be on the same page. If we do a skype typed chat, it might be easier to transcribe and have it allin writing.
(I also like the idea of uniform ways to accept, reject, and ask for rewrites. Each editor does have their own style but submitters should know, in general, what to expect).

I may be staring at a giant pile of student papers (like, around 100 pages of stuff do go through) but I will say that my students totally rock. out of 24, only 4 are not in the A/B range and their work does impress my fellow teachers and make me look all good and stuff.
Plus, I was observed today and despite me being way off my normal game and feeling like shit, the observer said if this was an off day I'm lucky because it looked really good to him.

Re: You know what grinds my gears?
November 1, 2009 by victorya
your vivid descriptive skills made that story all the more disturbing.
Incidently, flies give live birth - I discovered this the hard way when I swatted a fly with one of those swatters with all the little holes, and the maggots exploded forth from the fly's body, through said holes, and onto my face.
My gear grinding for today: This damn story I have to write by Wednesday. 1. I know I'm doing it wrong, but it's a first draft so I don't care and 2. It's going into dark places so I don't want to finish it 3. There's a halloween party tonight, but because of said story I'm not feeling sociable so 4. I'm watching the original Night of the LIving Dead (to procrastinate)

Re: What was your strangest or most frustrating rejection?

I always hate when they spell my name wrong in the rejection (which happened recently).
Really? They can't just cut and paste from my cover letter or byline or something?

If it's dr...a...m..a free, that would be cool! Sick of drama, bad drama, not Dr. Pus good fun drama.
It also depends on if I get the funding for the Denver trip I probably have to take the week or so before.
I also am REALLY jonesing for a diet coke, ugh.

I've just been waiting to get a sub from the dunwoody to delve back in :)
I'm around a bit more, got the main papers in, STILL WANT MOAR! so no fret my pet, kind of reading through them all a few times, putting some in one pile, some in another, tasting each one for meatiness, smoky flavour, what wine complements them the best. . .
OMG, it feels good to be able to breath again, and with only a few new bug bites :) I'm tasty to everything out here.

it is still open! omg, I feel so bad about getting so behind on this. I have 56+56 (can't do math today) papers sitting on my desk to be graded. I got through a couple bacon stories today. If I'm way behind on yours, which I probably am, I sincerely apologize! If it helps, I'm kind of behind on everything right now :)
Bacon power!
Also, fun story. For dinner this week I made a veggie burger, and then wrapped it in bacon. Then I piled on avocado. It was really tasty.

That thing, the state insect of my 'home' for the next few years, is what is beleived to have attacked my leg. You know what it is? A tarantula wasp. You know what it does? Kills tarantulas. You know how? It injects them with venom, drags them to its nest, and then layes its eggs on the tarantula. The eggs hatch and eat the still living tarantula. Oh, but it feeds off of nectar - yeah. And oh yeah, pretty damn big too.
Here's how it was figured out:
Me: So I was walking on the sidewalk, and felt this sharp pain, and this huge ass bug as big as my leg is attached too it. I freak and wipe it away, and end up having to go to the doctor because it's so swollen.
Guy: Have you looked up Tarantula wasps? There's a lot of them around here.
Me: (goes to google) big with brown wings and painful.
Guy: Yup, tarantula wasps, our state insect.
Now, consider a little research shows that they are considered second to the bullet ant in terms of pain. While my leg (a week and a half later) is a little achy, and swollen, and red...the initial sting wasn't horrible making me think that either a. I knocked it off before it got it's entire stingy part in me (which is 1/3 of an inch long) or b. It was another really big venomous flying bug. But it looks approximately like what got me.
Oh, and I had shown that picture (of the wood louse) to someone recently, before seeing it posted here - it was a 'natural or medical' gross out contest - I won :D
ETA: I just found a web forum with people posting pictures of their reaction to the sting/bite, and it looks WAY like mine, so maybe I was lucky with the initial pain, or have blocked it out. . .

I'm alive! Barely. As the good doc said, insanely busy. I'm just getting to read and document them in the database, or was before I got bit by something apparently venomous/poisonous/dirty which set back my energy level a bit as I had to get shots and meds and, yeah! life in the desert. I've been here three weeks and to the hospital twice :) Today I've got that there pain in the arm from the shots.
My process is to read at least twice, plus input it in the database along with the basic premise/word count/etc. to make sure we don't have too many similiar stories - which we haven't yet! Bacon is so versatile. So some of your stories I have read, just not the second time yet.
In fact, while in the waiting room at the hospital (after the THIRD person examined the bite to make sure it wasn't a recluse - it's not a spider bite BTW, they just think the fangs/probiscus/jaws of whatever bit me were REALLY dirty causing an infection) I was reading an interview with Paula Dean - it asked if she was on a desert island and had to choose between butter and bacon which she would choose, and it was bacon hands down.
Nothing is more versatile and inspiring than bacon. Maybe if I place a few slices over the wound it'll heal faster :)

Nothing like hitting desert mountains during the hottest time of the year.
So, to those in submissionland for baconology, might be another week or so as I figure things out here. I still have barely moved - my body and suitcases are here, boxes and all that jazz are back in NY. I already hit the doctor, he said a number of people who move here, a high number, get sick the first month or so from the change in altitude and temperature. And yeah, I'm sick.
On the plus side, my landlord is awesome and partially furnished the place (including with a bed) and said he's got a television somewhere he'll bring over and hook up with free cable. I kind of like having a half-coyote/dog that patrols the place too, especially since it approves of me.

When a pour a nice big bowl of cereal and pour in the last of the milk, turn around to answer the phone, turn back around and see my cat eating out of the bowl!
-zdayishere
As someone previously owned by cats, uhm, that wouldn't faze me really. With all their licking and hair in everything I swear a cat person's diet involves at least 5-10$ cat by-product.

Ms. Gardner - Baconology is an anthology of horror stories. Horror stories involving bacon. Yes, zombies are allowed.
I haven't checked the e-mail in a couple of days, packing and all that, I'm hoping to have everything done in terms of my move tomorrow night, leaving me one day to read.
Please do submit!
