robertessig's Blog
I write horror and dark fantasy--there's a fine line between the two that is vague and distorted. I am married with one child and live in southern California. I have been published in several small press venues with much more to come.

Do you know that it's only since playing Rock Band: Beatles that I realised where you got the Done in One song from? How unBritish is that?

Actually I'd go with Alice's "Welcome to my Nightmare". But that's just me.
Have fun at "The Library" Keeper.
YOU are welcome here!

Ah-ha, now I see where I blended the titles.

I was in a garage band in high school. My bass player would come over to my house and insist on watching Rawhead Rex over and over. I've seen that goddamned movie so goddamned much...AAArrrrggggg!
But then again, I love Killer Klowns from Outer Space, and I know there's a few Librarians who HATE that flick.

Um, not to be a smart ass or anything.....
Welcome to Hell --- VenomGo To Hell ---- Alice Cooper-bagabones
Oops! You're right.
I have several Venom albums, but not that one. Funny thing is, there's a song from a little known band called Haunted Garage called Welcome to Hell that's running through my head.
Have you heard the Venom song Buried Alive? One of the best intros I've ever heard (particularly when the volume is cranked). They must have stuck a mic in a box and threw shovels of dirt over it to get the eerie effect.

You kept coming back because the forum is laced with visual zombie dope that seeps into your retinas through the computer screen--now you're addicted!
In the words of Alice Cooper, "Welcome to Hell."

I love "Books of Blood", especially Rawhead Rex. Such as shame they made that shit movie from it.

"By Maggots Be Driven"
November 23, 2009 by robertessig
My story "By Maggots Be Driven" is published in the anthology Abaculus III, out now from Leucrota Press. Check it out here: http://www.leucrotapress.com/AbaculusIII.html
She cares for her daughter in the wake of her husband's untimely death, but the lines were becoming blurred, and the maggots were showing up in the damnedest places...and that daughter of hers was taking daddy's death so damn easily...and....
Re: Is it neccesary for a story to have a protagonist?
November 23, 2009 by robertessig
Some semantic quibbling:
While I agree with the general opinion that a story doesn't need a "hero" or even a likeable protagonist, a coherent story needs to have some kind of protagonist. Even if that person is extremely disagreeable or downright evil, the story needs to be about someone (or something).
In other words, "protagonist" does not necessarily mean "good guy." A story about a bad person doing bad things still has a protagonist -- just an evil one.-michaelclea
Interesting point. Protagonist has always seemed like "good guy" to me, though I obviously don't jive with that notion.
I'm comfortable with an evil protagonist. ![]()

The Great and Secret Show is badass; the only other Clive Barker novel I like better than it is The Damnation Game. (The Books of Blood will always be my fav, though).-bhallhall
Have you read Weaveworld? The villins are just goddamned amazing in that one, particularly Immacolata. What an immagination Clive Barker has. His blending of horror and fantasy is amazing.
Oh yeah, the Books of Blood are brilliant.
