Thanks to Todd for this idea.

This is what I want to do. Y'all know that "our" charity here at The Library is First Book.

http://www.firstbook.org/site/c.lwKYJ8NVJvF/b.674095/k.CCA8/First_Book_Homepage.htm

I would like to put together a zombie anthology where all proceeds, 100% of them, will go to First Book as a donation. I will be asking authors to contribute stories for free. All authors will receive recogntion in the book and all press releases for their contribution.

I will pay for all of the printing costs, advertising costs and publishing costs.

I have already contacted First Book and will post their reply when they e-mail me.

This is someting that all of you Good Librarians can be a part of. If you'd like to submit a new short zombie story send it to lotldpress@yahoo.com and title the e-mail "First Book". 6K word limit.

If you are not an author and would like to contribute money to defray the cost of the book, or just make a donation through The Library, go to the podcast site www.dr-pus.podomatic.com and make a PayPal donation or send a check/money order to:

Library of the Living Dead
PO Box 666
New Cumberland, WV  26047

All contributors will be given a special thank you in the book.

This can be our way to get books into the hands of the children who so desperately want to read and yet don't have the financial means to buy their own books.

Undead love to all,

Doc

Here's the first e-mail from First Book:

Dear Michael,

Thank you for contacting First Book! If you requested a response, you will be hearing from us very soon.

We are grateful for your interest in supporting First Book's mission to provide new books to children in need addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy – access to books.

In 2008, First Book celebrated the distribution of our 60 millionth book! Together with our committed supporters and partners, we look forward to bringing 60 million more books into the lives of children who are waiting for them.

Sincerely,
First Book

Excellent idea.  Let's get those children into reading.  Make for bigger brains, bigger brains.  I like it.  I'll surely send a story in!  You can count on me for that!

Any type of story? Any theme?
Would it be wise to keep it kid friendly (as far as possble) in case First Book want to have a copy?
Like tone down the cussing and child abuse. Or am I being too PC?

This anthology will not be for the children. Only the proceeds will go to First Book. The anthology will be like the Zombology anthologies. Short zombie stories, 6K max.

Here's the e-mail I received from Bonnie at "First Book" and my response:

Hello Dr. West,

Thank you for contacting First Book. This sound really great! We are always thrilled when authors are inspired to not only create new stories but also help less fortunate children by donating to First Book. Could you tell me a little more about this promotion, how First Book would be involved and the timeframe?

Thank you for your time,
Bonnie

Hello Bonnie!

I'll tell you a little about myself and my publishing company. I'm a dentist in New Cumberland, WV who just so happens to be a huge zombie fan. I have a podcast that is downloaded over 2,500 time per week all over the world. From that podcast came the idea to publish zombie short stories and novels. Thus came the birth of "Library of the Living Dead Press". We currently have 4 books published with 15 more in the works.

I have been blessed with a great job and a very supportive family. I also have over a hundred people who contribute to my podcast, forum and books. I call them the "Good Librarians".

The idea of giving to a charity came up on the forum and since I now deal in books I began to look for a literacy program. I was very impressed with "First Book". Especially the incredible percentage of the money that actually goes to getting books into childrens' hands. Thus "First Book" became our official charity for "Library of the Living Dead".

"Night of the Giving Dead" will be an adult anthology full of zombie short stories. We've had great sales on the one anthology that's in print. I plan on contacting some big name authors to contribute to the book. I will also be using my well known (and some not so well known) authors from "Library of the Living Dead Press".

Timeline for publication will most likely be at least two months. I want this anthology to be perfect and that will take some time. All of the proceeds made from the sale of the book will be sent monthly to "First Book"

"Library of the Living Dead Press" will pay for all printing, publishing and advertising costs. All monies made from sales on Amazon.com and other numerous online book sellers will go directly to "First Book". I'm not sure at this time what the total amount will be, but I'm believing it should be in the thousands.

So, that's what we have planned. This is our way to support literacy and we look forward to being partners with "First Book" to make this a fun, as well as lucrative experience.

Looking forward to working with you Bonnie,

Mike

What I would really appreciate from all of you is, if you know an author, hit him/her up for a story. I'd love to have someone like Brian Keene give us a short zombie story for this anthology. I'm gonna hit up all of the one's I know personally.

Plus we will need some MAXIMUM PIMPAGE for this. Y'all can start hitting all of the boards your belong to.

Yeah, this is gonna be cool as hell!

Hey, Doc!  Make sure to mention it on the Funky Werepig when you're on!  There's a wide variety of authors that both participate and listen in.

I'll also make mention of it at Choate Road in the forum, maybe drum up some interest there, too.

I made a post on my review site www.hiveofhorror.vox.com

Okay, todays entry isnt a review.
Night of the Giving Dead is a recently announced charity project from Library of the Living Dead publishing ( www.libraryofthelivingdead.lefora.com - official website of the comapny and podcast)
Dr. Pus is looking for authors and stories of the zombie persuasion. Any stories are considered "Donations" to the book and 100% of the proceeds for this book will go to First Book, a group dedicated to getting books into the hands of less fortunate children. You can check out the website here http://www.firstbook.org/site/c.lwKYJ8NVJvF/b.674095/k.CCA8/First_Book_Homepage.htm . If anyone reads this i would challenge you to tell all your friends to keep an eye out for this when it is published, and if anyone is a budding author, contribute a story of 6k words max. this is a wonderful charity and one worthy of our attention....
please, if you visit any message boards or forums, please reprint this post and spread the word around!

Thanks in advance!

If I can come up with something good enough, I'll be happy to contribute a story.  I'll see what I can do.
