Mike put his head down and ran harder. There was no way Stewart was going to beat him. Mike hadn't lost a race in years, and he sure as hell wasn't going to lose to Stewart.
His legs burned. His ankles throbbed, begging him to stop. He didn't listen. Stewart was just a few feet ahead.
The long yellow ribbon that marked the finish line came into view.
Shit, thought Mike, pushing himself harder.
He stumbled, almost falling to the pavement.
No!
He recovered and ran with all his might, harder than ever before. But Stewart had gained at least ten feet. No, dammit, no!
Stewart raised his arms in victory as he hit the finish line. Mike waited for the ribbon to snap and give way.
It didn't. Stewart gave way as the razor wire someone had hidden there sliced through him.
Mike had enough time to watch Stewart split in two. Had enough time to watch Stewart's guts spill out and splatter across the pavement.
But Mike didn't have enough time to stop.
