Hmm, Monster Island, Monster Nation, I recall it starts with a doctor taking control of his re-animation as a zombie. I recall hating the ending, but enjoying the new age zombie and her encounter with the bear.

"CYJJ," wasn't my intended post. I had given a detailed opinion of the Monster series by Mr. David Wellington. At some point I deleted it and entered a four stroke jib...opps. Do forgive!
Will repost this another time.
LOL.
We all look forward to the 'real' review; that one was too brief.
I enjoyed them too; a nice different take on the usual zombies.
David Wellingtons' "Monster" series is entertaining, thought provoking, and addictive. For the first time (that I'm aware of), the reader was able to view the world through the eyes, errr...carcus of a zombie.
Personally, I'm not one for fantasy. I prefer a realistic approach to the zombie genre. The more plausable the virus, the more believable the work I'm reading.
Mr. Wellington removed the probablility factor from the possible scenarios that could potentially establish a real-life, almost dead, cannibalistic, violent human virus. This was a let-down for me, but I couldn't put-down any one of the trilogy.
The fantasy plot, the magic, and the far fetched returners (geeze, as if zombies aren't far fetched...right?) are the reason I can't consider these works as "the best" in my novel zombie collection...but they're a must have nonetheless!
I don't know man, I think that original review gives the reader a lot of room to really think and take in.
I hated how humanity survived at the end. Just because she solved a nonsense riddle. Up until then it was pretty good. I enjoyed the part about the strangled man asking can they please be the monsters now!
I am in the middle of Monster Nation, and it's good....but not the books haven't been ones that I just couldn't put down, like Day by Day Armageddon, or the like.
As I was reading it I thought that it would be an excellent setting for a role-playing game. I liked the idea of random special zombie powers for the sentient dead.
You always have to wonder who hands out super powers. If I could do it I'd saddle people with the most worthless powers available. I mean, they happen at random right! How about the ability to always find the letter y on the keyboard, or the ability to brush your teeth without splattering toothpaste! For the undead, it would be the ability to compose elevator music.
As for monster books, am I the only one who didn't understand why the mad scientist was needed for the book? If it's supernatural in origin then why not let it be supernatural? Perhaps I'm just bitchy. I got the books on computer, and like many stories on computer ran them through Natural Voice Reader.
They were well enough done to get me to listen to all of them! However, I would'nt have made it through reading them in text.
I have the autumn series on computer too. That's a series I would have bought in paper. It was not because the story was so riveting! It was because it was so plausible! It was one of the most reasonable accounts of how the dead would rise that I've listened to.
ps, I think natural voice reader is free now.
Overall I enjoyed the Monster series, but I felt like they got worse as they went along. By the end of the third one I felt like I just wanted it to be over.
I did like the liches tho. That was a cool concept.
The liches were very well done. I think Wellinton did a great job with all of the books. I LOVED the undead tentacle thingy!!
The undead and tentacles somehow seem so natural.. I wonder why...
I love this series, I will echo the concern about the ending of the first book...I like the way it ended just not the way the narrative portrayed it.
