In the furor over the Retarded Review, it emerged that we need some listings of what's good, and what's not. I know this is subjective. What I like is not going to be what other's like. However, I'm sure there must be some similarity. I sorted these in five categories. Under Good and OK I divided them up into comedy and more serious. The categories overlap to some extent.

Here's what's in Aldon's Video Library. The dates are whatever I could find on the VHS or DVD. I guarantee no accuracy. Some were recorded from broadcast and have no date on them. The list is not complete, I loan some out. Some are packed away. These are the ones on the shelves in the house.

Gold Standards

Night of the Living Dead, 1968. The full Length Feature Film (several copies, all the 68
edition. People know I like zombies so the keep giving it to me!)
Resident Evil, 2003. (reasonably slow zombies, and other monsters)
Reanimator, ?. H.P. Lovecraft (He never started out with slow zombies, and I love the ending.)
Dawn of the Dead, the first. Shopping mall and all.
Return of the Living Dead, 1985. Punk rock and zombies!

Sorta Zombie Gold Standards

The Omega Man, ?. (I am Legend movie)
The Ressurected, 1991. H.P. Lovecraft. Has some zombies, but they are not the focus.
Night of the Comet, ?. Not really zombies. A comet destroys those exposed to it.
Impulse, ?. slow, but wonderful! Not often talked about. Toxic waste spill slowly
altering people by removing the moral restraints on behavior. Source of 28 days?

Good

Comedy
Chud II, 1988. (Bud the Chud) Hey, I liked Bud. I really liked his way of showing love!
Night of the Living Dorks, 2007. Better than one would think.
Hide and Creep, 2005. Southern style. I loved the preacher.
Shaun of the Dead. ?. For funny, but to me, not as good as it could have been.

More Serious
Resident Evil Apocalypse, 2004. Good zombies and monsters.
The Zombie Pack
Zombi 3 Fulci 1988. A Romero rip off!
The Dead Next Door. ?. Loved the PC people getting eaten!
Day of the Dead, the first, ?. Something just wasn't as good as I expected!
White Zombie, ?. Bela Lugosi in voodoo paradise.
Bride of Reanimator. ?. More H. P. Lovecraft.
The Last Man on Earth, 1964. Vincent Price (I am Legend movie)
Land of the Dead, 2005. I wouldn't reccomend the fish either.
Night of the Creeps. ?. Space slug zombies.
The Dead Next Door. ?. Loved the PC people getting eaten!

OK

Comedy
Return of the Living Dead, Rave to the Grave 2005.

More Serious
Return of the Living Dead, 3. The Self Mutilating Girl
Return of the Living Dead, Necropolis 2005. Cute Child that Dies! I hate Cute Kid movies!
Dawn of the Dead, 2004. Zombies fast when first infected, slower with death. I could accept it.
Severed, Forest of the Dead, 2004. Barely in this category.
City of The Walking Dead, 1994. Romero ripoff.
Dead Meat, 2005. (fangoria, Cows) Would have been better if you could understand the dialog.
Resident Evil Extinction (3) 2008
I Zombie, ?. No action, but shows a man becoming a zombie.
Undead, 99?. Zombies down under. It lost it at the end!

Less than OK

Why sort into comedy or more serious? They suck!

Day of the Dead, the need to feed, 2008 release. Gecko Zombies.
Automaton Transfusion, 2008. Fast zombies. Pretend it's 28 days and it's OK.
Return of the Living Dead 2, 1987, Cute Child that lives! I hate cute kid movies! I did like it when they killed the Michael Jackson Zombie.
The Stink of the flesh, 2005. Swingers and zombies.
Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things, 1972, No zombies till the end. Just a lot of dialog.
Children of the Living Dead, ?. Well, it tried. Satanic zombies. Slow, poorly done.
Necronomicon, Book of the dead
Adaptation of Cool Air by Hp. Lovecraft.
Beyond Reanimator, ?. They lost it big time by looking for souls. Only here due to prison break scene.
Zombie Night, 2005. Good start, but could not sustain it!
The Dead Don't Die, 1975. There's no excuse for this not being better than it was.

No amount of full frontal nudity could save it!

House of the Dead 2003. Had nudity! Still turned it off.
Zombie Chronicals, 3d. Not even in 3d does this make it.
The Forever Dead, 2008. A 12 guage enema is waiting for this one.
Horror Rises from the Grave collection, ?. Bad acting. Bad plots. Bad effects.
Zombie Flesh Eaters
Zombie Hell House
Night of the Ghoul
Astro Zombies, 1969. Not a cult classic for me!
The Zombie Pack Collection
Zombie 4, ?. Vodoo Zombies. What can I say? Watch White Zombie instead.
Zombie 5, Killing Birds,1987. Lattanzi & D'Amato Directors. The birds should have killed them!

One other, but I think I took it outside and used it for a clay pigeon. The zombies were raised by a meteor. It took place with college students camping. Lots of boat scenes. Help my memory here people.

This is a topic I could really spend some time on, but I'll start it off with this, as it is fairly fresh in my mind. I bought this movie from a previously viewed DVD rack at a video store just because it had the word zombie in the title. I imagine I'll eventually, be able to turn this movie into a semi decent drinking game. The movie is ZOMBIE NIGHT. Talk about low budget, I'm thinking some friends got together, collected some aluminum cans by the roadside, and decided to make a zombie movie with he money collected from recycling. There is a very brief frontal on the top of a building, that is quite nice, but in no way excuses the rest of this movie. I mean this movie is so bad that it should be watched just so it can serve as a sort of depth gauge to compare other movies with. You'll be able to say things like "Yeah, I saw that movie, but at least it wasn't as bad as ZOMBIE NIGHT." If you saw this movie and enjoyed it I'm sorry, I can in no way be considered a refind critic, and my opinion should be taken with a grain of salt...and maybe some form of alcohol, and possibly a cheese sammich.

Zombie Night sounds like one of those movies where you gather up a group of friends, have some drinks and just laugh. Every now and again you just need a real steaming pile of a movie to mock.

And never apologize for your opinion, be proud of it. If it sucked, stand tall and shout it.

In Zombie Night were the zombies raised by a meteor. Did it take place with college students camping. Lots of boat scenes.

Having actually read the list, what am I missing? What would you advise be added to the good and better? Night of the living dorks was a surprise, in that it was better than I thought.

ZOMBIE NIGHT was one of those unexplained zombie events. It started out with a guy and his wife driving and they end up taking refuge in some kind of mass storage facility. There's this alpha male struggle for leadership theme that just drags and drags through the whole deal.

I gotta say your collection is quite impressive, theres alot of stuff there I haven't seen yet. If I were going through your list I'd have to go a piece at a time. I'll start with your first Group the Gold Standards. I agree mostly. I think we need to have George Romeros Night, Dawn, and Day all three are classics, love them, I watch them over and over. Re-Animator was a long tiime ago and I don't remember it so well. I take it if your rating it as gold standard you'd recommend the purchase? I might just pick that one up. Not sure about the placement of Resident Evil in Gold Standards, it just didn't seem like it was geared to zombie fans. I agree that the potential was there, and I thoroughly enjoyed the game series, but it seemed like they dialed it down to get a broader box office dollar (on a side note I enjoyed the most recent edition of these movies alot more than it's predecessors). And Oh, Yeah Return of the Living dead. TAR MAN in the basement, that dreaggin limp the shoulder movement absoloutly AWESOME. After much begging, I got my wife to watch that one with me, and she wouldn't do laundry for months (at the time our washer and dryer was in a not so well lit basement). It didn't help that I was also fond of whipping out a "MORE...BRAINS" imitation for good measure every once in awhile. To be honest he creeps me out too. The only horror movie character/creature to give me the heebie geebies. Yeah, that one belongs in the Gold Standards as does its soundtrack.

Nope, that wasn't it. In fact, I see it's still on my list. It was pretty forgetable. Tar man, however, is one of my favorites. I loved the movie and the soundtrack. One of my favorite lines is the one about rabid weasels.

Re-Animator was picked as much for the lovecraft theme as it was for the zombies. The fast zombies there don't bother me. Which is not true for most of the other zombie movies. Perhaps I simply rationalize, but it never started off with slow zombies. The ending was excellent, but not well followed up on. In bride they could have made a much better sequel. The third in the series had an excellent prison scene of the dead, but the rest was poor. It ended in rats and penis's.

Dor some reason Day OD never worked well for me. I've never quite been sure why. In any case, the first re-animator was enjoyed. The ressurected is a little slow, but well acted.

I did leave the evil dead off my list. I got a copy for 99 cents at a pawn shop because it was on VHS cassette. They are over the top fun. It's sad my last memory of Bruce was the car commercial he was in.

Resident evil didn't have a full zombie focus, but it had a lot. It had the slower zombies, and they did a good job of orchestrating the critters. I did like the undead puppy dogs. We'll have to get one of those for zombie farmer.

I finally saw zombie strippers. Definately a comedy, as one would hope from the title. I think I'm ready for a more serious one though!

Dead Fury
Has anyone seen or heard anything about this one?

Nice!

It kinda reminded me of Team America for some reason. A zombie puppet film could be cool.

Thunderbirds Vs The Zombies....

Brains: "Gee Mr Tracy, it looks like the dead are coming back to f-f-f-east on the living!

Dick: "Don't worry Brains, I'll send Gordon in TB2 with pod 245."

Fantastic post! This makes me wonder if there IS such a thing as a "coincidence!" Over the past year I've been toying with the idea of building a zombie movie collection. I've picked up a few of the better known titles, but have opted to stick to the "spines 'n' jackets."

I had just recently been researching online zombie collections (i.e. http://www.library.fau.edu/npb/zombie.htm is a good one). Now I've found myself left wanting...

Does anyone know of an thorough, complete, and currently updated zombie film and book data base? I'm looking for the "mother" of all data bases!

Unfortunately, Nope! Such a creature would have to shamble into the light with plot summaries and ratings. I mostly rely on mail order zombie for the reviews. Unfortunately, I don't know if they have a list. We must seek the advice of Dancingfred for this one.

Bro D keeps threatening to do a list of all the films he has reviewed with their headshot ratings but no sign yet. Busyiness, I think.

 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_zombie_films

This seems pretty good for films.

There is a pretty good discussion of that page as to whether 28Days etc should be classed as zombie films or not.
